Parent Day Out – Childcare Fundraiser

Ages: Children must be potty-trained to attend
Cost: $5/hour per family (up to 3 children)

Calling all parents! This is your opportunity to get some early Christmas shopping done, go out with your partner or a friend, or just relax in a quiet house. Childcare will be provided by Awake board members and youth from Youth Crossroads. Lunch will be provided by Culver’s of Berwyn. Children will enjoy crafts, games and a movie. All proceeds will benefit Awake’s educational programs. Please register in advance to guarantee your spot.

Toy Workshop with Hope Houses

Ages: 3rd grade and up – child must be accompanied by an adult
Cost: $10 suggested donation (per adult-child team)
Dates: Thursday, December 6

This workshop will take place at Hope Houses.

Learn to work with wood in this fun workshop. Each adult-child team will build a wooden toy using tools and supplies at Hope Houses. The toys will make excellent gifts for a family member or friend. Only one child per adult registration.

Summer Reading Program – mini version

Ages: 4-5 years old
Cost: $10, cost is refunded if child attends all 5 classes
Dates: Tuesday OR Thursday, July 10-August 9
Time: 10am-11:15am

NOTE: This program takes place at World’s Largest Laundromat, 6246 W Cermak, Berwyn.

Our research-based summer reading program is designed to help young children develop strong pre-reading skills and a love of books. Students will work in a small groups with a qualified teacher and program aide. The program meets once a week for five weeks. Instruction will focus on letters, letter sounds, sight words and enjoyment.

This program is possible due to support from The Benson Family Charitable Foundation (World’s Largest Laundromat). We are very grateful for their support!


Summer Reading Program

Ages: Entering K – 6th grade
Cost: $15, cost is refunded if child attends at least 9 classes
Dates: Monday/Wednesday, June 25-August 6 (no class July 4)
Time: 4:30-6:30pm

Our research-based summer reading program is designed to help students improve their reading skills and enjoyment of reading over the summer months. Students will work in small groups with a qualified teacher and program aide. The program meets twice a week for six weeks, for a total of 24 hours of instruction. The goal of Science Club is to develop students’ interest in and aptitude for STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Each class will include an engaging, hands-on project that students will work on individually or as a part of a group. Resources will be provided to parents who want to extend learning beyond the program.

Awake, BAM! (Berwyn Arts and Music) and Youth Crossroads are partnering to offer a workshop for incoming 6th graders. Older middle and high school students from Youth Crossroads will lead participants through a variety of activities and answer questions about middle school in a discussion panel. 100% of past participants report feeling more confident about middle school as a result of this program.

Young Foodies Cooking Class

Ages: 1st – 6th grade
Cost: $5 suggested donation
Dates: Wednesday, October 17
Time: 5-7pm

No School Day – Art Field Trip to Pilsen

Ages: 1st grade and up
Cost: Suggested donation $10 per child, parents go for free
Dates: Tuesdays, November 6
Time: 12-5pm

Join us for a field trip to experience Mexican art in Pilsen. We will meet at Unity and the bus will leave at 12pm.  We will begin with a 1-hour guided walking tour of murals in Pilsen, led by Pilsen Public Art Tours. After taking a break to play in Harrison Park, we will enjoy a guided tour of the National Museum of Mexican Art’s Day of the Dead exhibition. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a packed lunch.
