Rising Together

Covid-19 Update
The COVID-19 crisis impacts everyone in Berwyn, but it is most devastating to our neighbors who work minimum-wage jobs or who are ineligible for government assistance due to their immigration status. Those needing help include many of Awake’s program participants and community volunteers, who have reached out to us for help. Awake has responded by creating the Berwyn Community COVID-19 Assistance Fund to support our friends and neighbors with $500 mini-grants to help with rent, utilities and other necessities. As of May 18, we have distributed 78 mini-grants to local families. If you are able, please join with us in providing funds to Berwyn families in need.

Awake is a small (but mighty!) volunteer-led organization located in Berwyn, Illinois. Awake’s mission is to be a catalyst for good relationships, leadership, and justice in Berwyn and the surrounding communities. Our primary activities are to provide community organizing support to residents working to create positive change in the community, and to offer educational programming to children and families in the areas of reading, STEM and arts/culture.

The strong relationship Awake has built with the Berwyn community since 2015 – and especially its most vulnerable immigrant residents – has grown out of our deep commitment to our mission. Awake has been on the front lines supporting transgender students at Morton high school as they pushed for transparent policies (2017-19), organizing parents to successfully halt school closures (2015), working with residents to implement city policies that protect immigrants (sanctuary city status and $15 minimum wage, 2016-17), as well as exploring options for a local newspaper. Our on-going educational programming annually serves 100+ children through summer reading and STEM programs, and year-round cultural field trips and enrichment workshops, while also providing leadership training to 12-15 local high school students who serve as program aides. Awake was started by members of Unity Lutheran Church, a progressive ELCA church in Berwyn. Awake was awarded its own 501c3 status in 2019.
